Installing OptionStudioEvo, and the Windows warning

Windows will tell you it has protected your PC. The message is expected: it is not a virus, and the program is safe to install. Here is why it appears, and what to click.

First, the short version

Nothing is wrong. Windows does this with every new program.

OptionStudioEvo is not code-signed yet. So Windows cannot tell who made it, and warns you instead of trusting it. That is the whole reason.

Windows keeps a reputation for every program: who signed it, how many people have run it. A signed program from a large company arrives with that reputation built. A new, small, unsigned program arrives with none, so Windows warns you instead of guessing. The warning says «unrecognized», not «infected»: different words, and that difference is this page.

What to click

Four clicks, and it is done.

The labels below are the ones Windows 10 and Windows 11 use in English. In an Italian Windows they are «Ulteriori informazioni» and «Esegui comunque».

  1. Open the installer you downloaded. A blue window appears with the title Windows protected your PC. Nothing has run yet: Windows is waiting for you.
  2. Click «More info». It is the small text link inside the message, not the big button. The window then shows the program name and publisher — no publisher listed, because the program is not signed.
  3. Click «Run anyway». That button appears only after «More info». It is your decision, and this page helps you make it safely.
  4. Follow the installer. Choose the folder, confirm, wait for it to finish. If your browser warns first that «this file is not commonly downloaded», the option to keep it is in the download bar or in the «…» menu next to the file.

If your antivirus insists

An antivirus may block a program it has never seen.

Some antivirus programs do not stop at warning: they quarantine or delete the installer. This happens to new, unsigned software of every kind; the decision is made on reputation, not on anything inside the file.

If it happens to you, act in this order:

  • Check where the file came from. It must be the download from optionstudioevo.com. If it came from anywhere else, delete it and download again from the site.
  • Look at what the antivirus actually says. «Unknown publisher», «not commonly downloaded», «low reputation» are reputation warnings. A named detection — a virus name — is a different thing: do not ignore it.
  • If you decide to proceed, restore the file from quarantine, or add an exception for the installer and for the folder where the program is installed. Then run the installer again.
  • If you are not sure, stop. Write to us at info@optionstudioevo.com before you install. A warning you do not understand is not a warning to click past.

One thing we will never ask you to do

We will never ask you to turn off your antivirus or to disable Windows security to install this program. If a page or message asks that and it is not this page, it is not from us.

How to be sure the file is ours

Download it from one place, and check the fingerprint.

There is one official download, and it will be on this domain. Everywhere else — a mirror, a file-sharing link, an installer bundled with something else — is not ours, whatever the label says. The download address appears on this page on release day. Until then there is no file to download, anywhere, and anyone offering one is not us.

With the file we publish its SHA-256 fingerprint, and the command to compute it on Windows:

Get-FileHash <file> -Algorithm SHA256

Once the fingerprint is published here, compute it on the file you downloaded and compare the two strings character by character. If they match, the file is the one we built, byte for byte. If not, do not run it.

Why there is no signature yet

A signature is a yearly cost, and we chose to start without one.

A code-signing certificate removes this warning. It is paid every year, and it would come out of the same €49.99 the licence costs — one year of licence. No automatic renewal: at the end of the year, you decide. We chose to start without it and write this page instead — a page costs nothing and answers honestly. We keep the decision under review, with no date attached.

One thing this page cannot fix is reputation: even with a certificate, a program few people have run can still be watched for a while. A signature does not erase being new.

Two things may help you decide: the program makes no request to any server of ours, because we do not have one; and it reads your market data from your broker, with your own key. Neither is a reason to trust an installer blindly — check the fingerprint above — but both can be verified once it runs.
